Werewolf legends from Syria are charged with horror and tell the tale of a monster roaming the deserts of Arabia looking for men to devour. The Salu’ah, a demonic creature, shifts between human and animal form. Her gender questions traditional structures that label her as a monster and a female. Werewolf legends originated in many cultures, and these shapeshifters are often bloodthirsty beasts who cannot control their transformations. Native American cultures also have their own werewolf-like legends, such as the Navajo’s skinwalkers who can transform into animals, including wolves.

Werewolf legends from Korea include:
Gabriel is the fifth of the five angels who keep watch: “Gabriel, one of the holy angels, who is over Paradise and the serpents and the Cherubim”.
Kumiho (or gumiho): A creature that appears in Korean folktales and legends. It can transform into a beautiful woman to seduce men and then eat them.
Dokkaebi (Korean Goblin): Another mythological creature in Korean folklore.
Supernatural animals, ghosts, and mythical beings: Common in Korean legends and influenced Korean culture.
Nine-tailed foxes: Also present in Japanese and Chinese folklore.
The number five can represent different aspects depending on the tradition, but in this context, it could symbolize the five elements or five directions, with Gabriel overseeing the spiritual realm.
Gabriel is seen as the angel overseeing Paradise and the serpents/Cherubim
According to some interpretations, Gabriel is considered the “fifth of five angels” as he is often listed as the fifth guardian angel in a hierarchy of five.
