“In the Bavarian Alps, small communities have long been plagued by a terrible beast. Like a giant lizard with the head of a car, it made short work of lone travelers passing through remote mountains. Possessing great strength and a long sleek body, it is known to reside in tunnels deep within the mountains, only emerging to feed. Like a snake it senses even slight vibrations in the ground, knowing in advance when anyone was approaching. Many unsuspecting travelers have fallen prey to this monster, dragged underground and eaten alive. It’s breath is poisonous, it’s claws sharper than steel. In 1811 a local lord offered a bounty of gold to anyone who could kill the beast. Dozens of hunters and mercenaries set out to find the monster, aiming to bring back it’s head as a trophy. None of them were ever seen again.”

The site is steeped in historical significance, linked to an ancient city in the Achaea region. Researchers zeroed in on a building identified by the gamma symbol (“Γ”), thought to date back before 300 BC.

As they dug, the team unearthed numerous stone blocks and column fragments, and exposed the impressive 55ft-long southern edge of the structure, among other key components of the ancient edifice.
Long ago there was an evil king hated by all who knew of him. A cruel tyrant, he was corrupt and emotional, often venting his rage by abusing his subjects. For years he kidnapped, murdered, tortured, looted, as if he was deliberately causing his own people to suffer. Sometimes he would even hunt humans, chasing them down with a bow and arrow. One morning he shot dead an entire family of peasants. He enjoyed it, but it was the last straw. The Celtic gods of his tribe had long tolerated his blood lust, but this was too much. In revenge for the massacre they cursed him. The king and his family were transformed into stone. With their king now a statue, the tribe descended into civil war, soon fading from history. It is said their stone figures can still be found, somewhere in Southern Germany.
Noteworthy among the finds were gold earrings featuring lion head motifs; a luxurious gold earring fashioned in the image of Eros, the winged deity of love, au naturel, brandishing a scepter and a laurel in his hands; and a lavishly ornamented gold necklace. Eros, known as Cupid to the Romans, is enshrined in Greek mythology as the avatar of desire and romance, often portrayed as a sprightly being decked with wings, wielding a bow, and ready with an arrow.

The Devil’s Bridge (Uri)
This is the story of some local villagers who want to build a stone bridge. They come across a stranger who offers to build it for them. As his payment, the stranger – who is actually the devil – demands the first soul to cross the bridge. After three days, the bridge is finished and the villagers send a goat across the bridge. Livid, the devil hurls a rock to destroy the bridge, but he misses. Instead, the ‘Devil’s Stone’ falls into the canyon, near Göschenen, where it can still be seen today.
The bear and the missionary (St Gallen)
Numerous Swiss legends are centred around bears, recalling a time when these ursine creatures once roamed the land. In the 7th century, the Irish missionary Gall is said to have encountered a bear while out one night. The rest of the story differs according the version told. One version says that the holy man gave the hungry bear some bread. The bear was so grateful that he helped Gall build a hut that eventually became the monastery at St Gallen. In another version, Gall feeds the bear to thank it for helping him collect firewood, but makes it promise not to come back. Whichever story we take, the bear remains an important symbol for St Gallen, adorning the city’s coat of arms.
The Matterhorn (Valais)
Wherever there are mountains, there must be giants. Gargantua, a giant immortalised by Rabelais, is said to have left his mark on plenty of landscapes as he stomped across the country. There is a story, for example, that the hill on which Monthey (Valais) now stands is a sack of earth the giant was carrying and accidentally dropped. He was accompanied in his antics by another giant, Cervin, who was so heavy he caused a mountain to collapse, leaving only the space between his legs. This triangular peak, soaring to an altitude of 4,478 metres, is now known as the Matterhorn (or Cervin, in French) and is one of the most photographed scenes of Switzerland.

La bête du Gévaudan, Lozère
Horrific fatal attacks in the county of Gévaudan (roughly equivalent to today’s Lozère department) in the 18th century were blamed on an enormous beast which rumours claimed was a werewolf or an exotic monster. Its fame crossed borders until the royal army intervened.
l’Ankou, Brittany
Hailing from Celtic mythology, this figure is said to be the servant of Death and was feared in Brittany. He is depicted as a skeleton, sometimes draped in a black cloak and holding a scythe, an arrow or a spear. Legends say he rides a wagon with creaking wheels at night to collect the souls of dead people. If you hear the wheels or see this sinister cart, it means you or a loved one will die soo

The History, Meaning and Symbolism of the Irish Celtic Cross
www.x.com/saintgothic/status/1868025892594975115
Celtic Cross necklaces serve as more than just adornments. They embody a deep spiritual significance and are believed to protect those wearing them.
The Head: This can be subdivided into the center and the arms of the cross. Most stone crosses have a distinctive ring shape around the center of the head. Many consider this ring as the key defining feature of a Celtic cross

le Cheval Mallet, western France
This beautiful but evil horse, pure white, would appear at night alongside tired travellers in the old Poitou area of western France. The horse would be ready to ride with a saddle and tempt the exhausted traveller to climb on and rest their legs, only to then throw off the rider either over a cliff, into a river or on the floor to be stamped. Either way, the rider would die, unless he paid a ransom for the ride: a medal of Saint Benoît or six coins marked with a cross.
Père Fouettard, Alsace
Saint Nicolas in France (Father Christmas) is often associated with his opposite, le Père Fouettard. While Saint Nicolas, protector of the children, is celebrated on 6th December and ‘rewards’ good children with gifts and treats, le Père Fouettard punishes those who have misbehaved. The stories vary but he either leaves charcoal instead of sweets or beats children with a bag of coal or even a whip (leading to his name which means ‘Father whipper’). He’s depicted as a dishevelled, bearded old man in rags who carries a martinet.
Another maleficent creature, the voirloup is a man or a woman with a ‘dark soul’ who has committed the seven cardinal sins. They are possessed by Satan and, at midnight, transform themselves into animals, often wolves but also foxes, boars, goats or cats. They then spend the night roaming the forest, eating dogs or flock, lighting fires and generally frightening locals. They are mostly present in the Pays d’Othe, a hilly area in the Yonne and Aube departments.

The Alps are divided into three distinct physiographic sections: the Western, Eastern, and Southern Alps
The geological subdivision of the Alps is as follows:
Helveticum: In the north
Penninicum and Austroalpine system: In the center
Southern Alpine system: South of the Periadriatic Seam
The Alps are home to many notable peaks, including:
Mont Blanc: The highest peak in the Alps and Europe, standing at 15,776 ft (4,808 m). It’s located in the Graian Alps and spans France, Switzerland, and Italy.
The Matterhorn: An iconic peak in the Alps
The Eiger: An iconic peak in the Alps
The Alps are also home to many glaciers, with the largest glaciers located at the highest elevations. The Swiss Alps are known for their glaciers, including the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps.
The Alps are a biodiversity hotspot in Europe, with over 30,000 animal species and 13,000 plant species.
