Tiffany glass refers to the many and varied types of glass developed and produced from 1878 to 1929–1930 at the Tiffany Studios in New York City, by Louis Comfort Tiffany and a team of other designers, including Clara Driscoll, Agnes F. Northrop, and Frederick Wilson.

Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933) began his work in glass with the same tools and ingredients that had been used by artisans for thousands of years before him. Tiffany took the science of glassmaking, however, and elevated it to an art form of new brilliance and beauty.
Tiffany’s many companies used to produce everything from glass mosaics and molded buttons to leaded-glass lamps and windows.

“Silica (most commonly sand), soda or potash, and lime are the three primary ingredients of glass. When mixed, these raw materials form what artisans refer to as batch. Color is created in various ways, but often by adding either metallic oxides to the batch or various ready-made forms of colored glass during other stages of the glassmaking process.”
Opalescent Glass
The glass made at Tiffany Studios was called opalescent glass or American glass. It was radically different from pot metal, a type of glass commonly used in Tiffany’s era. Pot metal was uniformly colored, translucent, and regular in every way. Craftspeople making pot metal windows often painted them with enamels—a glass paste—to create form and visual effects.
By contrast, opalescent glass was fabulously varied in color and texture—even within a single piece of glass. By careful selection, Tiffany could use his glass to mimic foliage, fabric, water, or a sunlit horizon. Tiffany, in a sense, was painting with glass, as opposed to painting on glass. He applied for and received patents for his modifications and improvements upon opalescent glass, although John La Farge (1835–1910) first patented the underlying process in 1879.

Glass bead making has long traditions, with the oldest known beads dating over 3,000 years. Glass beads have been dated back to at least Roman times. The earliest glass-like beads were Egyptian faience beads, a form of clay bead with a self-forming vitreous coating. Glass beads were first created about 3,500 years ago in Egypt and Mesopotamia, and ever since glass bead designs and bead-making techniques grew increasingly complex. The ancient glassmakers were initially making glass from just three simple components – sand quartz, soda ash and limestone

Adjust the flame until you have a sharp edged blue cone. A bushy flame means you have too much gas.
If a powdered bead release is to be used, mix it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Dip each mandrel in the bead release and leave to dry. Some bead releases can be dried in the flame.
When ready to start forming your bead, take the mandrel with your other hand. Try to keep the glass in the flame and keep rotating and so that it doesn’t droop or cool, warm the mandrel in the flame just behind the glass. Hold the mandrel horizontally.
When the tip begins to glow, leave the glass in the flame a little longer, then start rotating the rod as a ball starts to form at the tip.
When you have added enough glass, pull away the glass rod (remember to keep the mandrel rotating in the flame). You will get a thin string of glass, just allow the flame to melt through it.
Carefully alter the position of the rod in your hand so that you are holding it like a pencil.
To round up your bead, keep the mandrel rotating in the flame until a smooth form is achieved.
Add any decor
Leave the bead to soak in water. Then scrub the inside with a bead reamer or a pipe cleaner. Now your bead is ready to use.

New and exciting discoveries that belonged to the first female pharaoh were unveiled to the public in Egypt. Archaeologist Dr. Zahi Hawass and his team have been working at the Temple of Hatshepsut in Luxor. Spanning three floors, it was built for the prominent queen who ruled during the 18th dynasty on the bank of the Nile. For the first time in thousands of years, people were able to lay their eyes on a thousand decorative stone blocks.

Glass etching, or “French embossing”, is a popular technique developed during the mid-1800s that is still widely used in both residential and commercial spaces today. Glass etching comprises the techniques of creating art on the surface of glass by applying acidic, caustic, or abrasive substances. Traditionally this is done after the glass is blown or cast, although mold-etching has replaced some forms of surface etching. The removal of minute amounts of glass causes the characteristic rough surface and translucent quality of frosted glass.
Clean the glass.
Come up with a design.
Adhere a stencil to the glass.
Apply etching cream.
Let the cream etch the glass for the specified time.
Rinse off the cream.
Peel off the stencil and clean the glass
