A flagon is a large vessel, typically made of metal, ceramic, glass, or leather, used for storing and pouring liquids like wine or ale. It often features a handle, spout, and lid, with a volume around 2 imperial pints (1.1 L). Historically, it’s linked to flasks and used in religious ceremonies for Eucharist wine.

Pewter’s link to Gothic architecture is indirect: in the late Gothic era (c. 1500), it was used for engraved vessels like flagons, featuring motifs such as arches and saints inspired by cathedral designs. In modern Gothic culture, pewter jewelry (e.g., crosses, skulls) is popular for its antique, dark aesthetic in fashion and accessories.

Historically, royalty used pewter for tableware like plates, dishes, tankards, flagons, ewers, and spoons; religious items such as chalices and communion cups; and decorative objects including candlesticks and inkwells. Edward I, for instance, owned over 300 pewter dishes in 1290 AD.

Pewter, a tin-based alloy, was used in ancient Egypt for decorative vessels and tableware, with the earliest known piece from a tomb circa 1450 BC. However, it held no specific symbolic meaning; symbolism was more associated with metals like silver (linked to the moon and purity) or gold (the sun and divinity). Egyptians valued it practically, not ritually.

The 4th Century AD, dichroic glass drinking cup with golden and silver base – This remarkable cup, known as the Lycurgus cup, has an almost magical feature found in rare pieces of Roman glass whereby the translucent glass changes colour in different light conditions. This effect is caused by colloidal gold and silver nano particles in the glass that alter the reflection of different wavelengths of light. The nano technology to reproduce this effect was only rediscovered by NASA in the late twentieth century.

Lycurgus Cup (4th Century AD); only complete example of ‘Colour-changing Dichroic Glass’ to survive from Rome Period.
The dazzling effect is achieved because the glass contains nanoparticles of gold and silver – this makes it turn from opaque green to translucent red when light is shone through it.
Cup is decorated with a high-relief design depicting a mythical story where Lycurgus, king of Thrace, is trapped in the branches of a vine.

Legends depict him as the “Swan King,” fond of moonlit sleigh rides and illusions. Declared insane in 1886, he was deposed and drowned mysteriously in Lake Starnberg—possibly suicide or murder. His legacy endures in Bavarian folklore and tourism.
An eccentric romantic, he withdrew from politics, lavishly patronized Wagner’s operas, and built dreamlike castles
King Ludwig II (1845-1886), Bavaria’s “Fairy Tale King,” ascended in 1864.
Bavaria is a federal state in Germany with a parliamentary government. The Landtag (state parliament) elects the Minister-President (currently Markus Söder of CSU), who heads the executive. It’s a republic since 1918, when the Wittelsbach monarchy ended after WWI
