This one has a unit stamp for the 61st BMGL (Mixed Legion Engineer Battalion, 1971-1982) one of only two mixed Sapper/Legionnaire units.

Les Diables Bleus, or Blue Devils, are the nickname for France’s elite Chasseurs Alpins mountain infantry. They fought in:
– WWI: Vosges Mountains, Hartmannswillerkopf, Alsace campaigns.

– WWII: Norwegian Campaign, Alps defense vs. Italy, Vosges liberation.

– Post-WWII: Indochina, Algeria, Afghanistan, Mali.

“Les Diables Bleus” refers to the Chasseurs Alpins, France’s elite mountain infantry during WWI. Nicknamed by Germans for their dark blue uniforms—jackets, breeches, capes, and large berets—that made them appear as shadowy devils in the Alps, combined with their ferocious combat prowess in battles like the Vosges. They broke trench stalemates with alpine tactics, embodying bravery.
