In this miniature, we see the mountaintop monastery rising like a heavenly city above the sea, accessible only by pilgrims brave enough to make the perilous journey.
Pilgrims arrive in boats, carts, and on foot, pausing to refresh themselves at a local inn. Yet this is no peaceful path: the devil lurks on the rocky cliffs, launching attacks on the travelers. But above, the mighty St. Michael, armed and radiant, strikes down the infernal forces to protect the faithful.
