From the Edo to early Meiji periods (17th–19th centuries AD), men’s kimono lacked pockets, so personal items were carried in inro cases suspended from the sash (obi). The set comprised a netsuke (toggle), a cord, and a sliding bead—the ojime—that secured the inro’s stacked compartments. Ojime were drilled lengthwise and handled constantly, and were made from durable materials such as ivory, bone, antler, wood, or metal; many were coordinated with matching netsuke and inro from allied workshops.
