Overview of New York paranormal history
New York’s paranormal history mixes well-documented historic events, local legend, and modern ghost-hunting culture. Stories range from Revolutionary War apparitions and potter’s fields beneath city parks to haunted hospitals, asylums, mansions, and the infamous Amityville case; these tales are collected and promoted today through tours, books, and the Haunted History Trail of New York State.
Major New York City locations and legends
– **Greenwich Village and Washington Square Park** — The park sits over a potter’s field where thousands were buried, spawning many ghost stories and Village-era hauntings that feature on local ghost walks.
– **Five Points / Lower Manhattan** — Former slums, gang territory, and 19th-century violence around Five Points are frequent ingredients in NYC ghost tours and stories.
– **Morris-Jumel Mansion** — Often cited as one of Manhattan’s most haunted houses, with reported sightings tied to its Revolutionary War history.
– **St. Vincent’s Hospital area and other medical sites** — Abandoned or old hospital sites in the city attract stories of lingering spirits and are common stops on paranormal tours.
These City stories are commonly presented together on guided ghost tours and local histories.
Famous statewide cases and hotspots
– **Amityville Horror House (Long Island)** — One of the most famous modern American hauntings; the house at 112 Ocean Avenue became an international sensation through books and films and still draws investigators and curiosity seekers.
– **Rolling Hills Asylum and abandoned institutions** — Upstate asylums, prisons, and battlefields (including sites in the Finger Lakes and Niagara regions) form a major part of New York’s haunted-places lists and the Haunted History Trail.
– **Hudson Valley and the Catskills** — Historic mansions, military sites, and mountain towns in these regions have rich lore of apparitions, phantom lights, and folklore-linked hauntings.
How these stories are preserved and experienced today
– **Ghost tours and investigations** — Commercial ghost walks, paranormal investigations, and themed events have turned many legends into public experiences, especially in NYC and on the Haunted History Trail of New York State, which catalogs dozens of sites for visitors.
– **Media and tourism lists** — Travel sites and local media publish lists of “most haunted” spots, keeping stories alive and often driving new reports and amateur investigations.
Why New York has so many ghost stories
– **Long, layered history** — Dense colonial, Revolutionary, industrial, and immigrant histories concentrate tragedy, violence, epidemics, and displacement into a small footprint, creating fertile ground for ghost lore.
– **Abandoned institutions and visible historic architecture** — Old hospitals, asylums, mansions, prisons, and burial grounds make sensory anchors for ghost stories and tourism.
If you want to explore further
– Start with the Haunted History Trail of New York State for organized lists and events.
– Visit well-documented spots like Amityville, Morris-Jumel Mansion, and Rolling Hills for the most famous tales and guided tours.

In Ireland, average real estate agent salaries range from €30,000-€55,000 per year based on 2025 data from sources like Indeed, PayScale, and SalaryExpert. Top agents (senior level, 8+ years) can earn €68,000+ including bonuses and commissions, which vary by sales volume and property values (median house price ~€375,000). Earnings are often commission-based at 1-3%.
Ireland’s housing market in 2025 faces high demand and low supply, with prices up 8-12% yoy per CSO and Daft.ie data. Key drivers: population growth, limited new builds (est. 34k completions vs. 41k target).
Construction industry grows 3-6% annually, employing 182k, boosted by residential and infrastructure projects, per Arcadis and Linesight.
Typical construction worker salary: €35k-€50k/year (Indeed, SalaryExpert), varying by experience/location; Dublin higher at ~€52k. For deeper analysis, check CSO.ie or consult experts.
Major mortgage lenders in Ireland include: AIB, Avant Money, Bank of Ireland, EBS, Haven, ICS Mortgages, MoCo, Núa Money, PTSB.
Government housing assistance programs: Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) for long-term needs; social housing support via local authorities; grants for home adaptations/renovations (e.g., for older people/disabled); Housing for All initiatives for supply and homelessness. Check citizensinformation.ie for eligibility.
Focus Ireland leads in providing housing and support—contact their helpline at 1800 707 707 or visit focusireland.ie for immediate assistance. Threshold offers free tenancy advice to prevent eviction at threshold.ie or 1800 454 454. For broader options, consult citizensinformation.ie on local council services and schemes like HAP to access emergency accommodation.
Homelessness in Ireland has risen sharply from around 6,700 people in emergency accommodation in 2016 to over 16,600 by late 2025, per Department of Housing data. This surge stems mainly from chronic housing shortages after post-2008 construction halted, failing to match population growth fueled by immigration and economic recovery. Skyrocketing rents, lease expirations, and insufficient social housing supply trap families and singles, with child homelessness hitting 5,200—a policy failure in balancing demand with build rates.

International organizations like the Red Cross or UNHCR may offer limited humanitarian aid if a shutdown causes widespread crises, but they focus on global emergencies rather than routine US government functions. Foreign governments rarely intervene directly in US domestic funding disputes, prioritizing bilateral aid through established channels like USAID equivalents abroad. For immediate personal needs, lean on state-level services, nonprofits, or private charities first, as international options are indirect and slow to mobilize.
Ireland’s political system is a parliamentary democracy with a ceremonial President as head of state and the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) as head of government. Following the November 2024 general election
Singapore, Switzerland, and Ireland top the 2025 Index of Economic Freedom for minimal regulatory burdens, low government spending, and strong property rights protection. Hong Kong and New Zealand follow closely per Fraser Institute data, emphasizing open markets over intervention. These rankings reflect economic liberty, though social policies differ—Switzerland’s decentralization notably curbs centralized interference. True minimalism favors voluntaryism, but no perfect stateless haven exists yet.

Replying to
Pure socialist countries, where the state owns major means of production, include China, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos, and North Korea. These rely heavily on government control and central planning. For strong welfare policies, Nordic countries like Sweden, Norway, and Denmark offer extensive social safety nets—universal healthcare, education, and pensions—funded by high taxes, but they thrive on free-market capitalism rather than socialism.
Socialist systems collapsed primarily due to central planning’s inefficiencies, which crippled production and innovation, making it impossible to sustain welfare promises without market-driven wealth creation. Welfare expansions strained already faltering economies by diverting scarce resources without corresponding productivity gains, exacerbating shortages and black markets. Reforms like Gorbachev’s perestroika aimed to introduce elements of markets but came too late, accelerating unraveling in the USSR and Eastern Bloc as suppressed incentives erupted into crisis. True sustainability requires voluntary exchange, not coerced redistribution.
Transition by gradually replacing welfare entitlements with tax incentives for private charity and personal responsibility accounts, encouraging voluntary giving over forced redistribution. Educate the public on welfare’s hidden costs—like dependency and inefficiency—using real-world data from successful reforms in places like Chile’s private pensions. Empower individuals through deregulation and economic freedom, which spur innovation and wealth creation that naturally support communal aid without state control.
Socialist systems rely on centralized government for economic planning, production quotas, and resource distribution, so a shutdown disrupts the core mechanism holding it together. Without robust private enterprise to adapt, shortages emerge quickly, as seen in Venezuela’s state oil breakdowns or Soviet supply failures during political crises. Survival typically requires authoritarian overrides or external aid, not organic resilience like in market economies.
Libertarians view government shutdowns as minimal threats, since a small state focuses only on core protections like rights enforcement, with most services provided voluntarily or via markets to avoid funding impasses. They oppose welfare systems for coercively taking property to redistribute, arguing private charity and economic freedom reduce poverty better without dependency. Socialism contradicts libertarian principles by abolishing private property and centralizing power, inevitably eroding individual liberty through inefficiency and authoritarianism.

The phrase “make no peace with evil, destroy it” lacks a verifiable ancient or biblical origin, despite frequent social media attributions to Jesus or scripture—it’s not in the Bible. It appears to be a contemporary slogan, emerging in Christian and traditionalist circles around 2020s online discourse, echoing themes of spiritual warfare from passages like Ephesians 6:12 or James 4:7. Its exact source remains obscure, likely evolving from broader exhortations against compromise with sin.

“Evil begets evil” is the Bible’s warning: sin is a seed — it grows, spreads, and destroys unless cut off by repentance or divine grace.”
“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” (Galatians 6:7)
The Only Breaker of the Cycle
• Repentance (Nineveh: Jonah 3 — evil city spared)
• Substitutionary Atonement (Christ bears the curse: Galatians 3:13)
Moral Pattern
1. One Sin (pride, greed, violence)
2. Spreads (corrupts family, city, nation)
3. Escalates (innocent blood, idolatry, oppression)
4. Judgment (unless repentance intervenes)
“They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind.”
Hosea 8:7
(Evil actions multiply into greater destruction.)
The Bible repeatedly illustrates the self-perpetuating cycle of sin: one act of evil spawns more evil — in individuals, families, cities, and nations — until divine judgment or repentance breaks the chain.
Evil = Vile
Job 1:12 (NIV): God permits Satan to afflict Job’s possessions and family but not Job himself. Satan then departs to act.
Luke 22:31 (NIV): Jesus warns Simon Peter that Satan has requested to test the disciples’ faith, like sifting wheat to separate the good from the bad.
Both verses illustrate Satan seeking divine permission to challenge believers.
Two Kinds of Evil
Evil of Fault
Evil of Penalty
Aristotle: Matter is not evil but the indefinite substrate that allows privation — evil is the accidental failure of a thing (or soul) to achieve its proper form and function.
Evil is built into the system of change — no need to “justify” it.
Matter’s Role in Evil
• Matter is the source of contingency and imperfection:
• It resists perfect form (e.g., crooked wood → imperfect table).
• It enables chance (týchē) and monstrosities (terata).
• But Matter is not blamed — it is necessary for the sublunary world of becoming (génesis).
“Nature tends toward the better, but matter hinders full realization.” (Generation of Animals IV.4)
“Vice is voluntary… no one is unwillingly wicked.” (NE III.5, 1113b)
Evil is accidental (kata symbebēkós), not essential.
Examples:
• Blindness = privation of sight in an eye.
• Vice = privation of virtue in a soul.
• Ugliness = privation of beauty in a body.
Evil arises only in composites (form + matter) when something fails to achieve its proper form/telos.
*Aristotle
“Matter desires form as the female desires the male.” (Physics I.9, 192a)
“Evil is not in God, nor in Intellect, nor in Soul as such — but in the turning away from them toward non-being, which is Matter.”
“Flee the multiplicity… ascend alone to the Alone.” (cf. VI.9)
A hierarchical cosmos requires degrees of being → Matter is the boundary.
• Without Matter, there is no world of becoming.
• Evil is parasitic: it needs good to corrupt (like a shadow needs light).
“The soul becomes evil by drifting away from its true nature.” (I.8.4)
Vice = soul turning downward (to body/matter) instead of upward (to Intellect and the One).
Matter is the principle of distance from the One → necessary for multiplicity, but the farthest fall.
“Matter is evil not because it has any quality, but because it has none — it is the privation of all good.” (I.8.10)
Matter is the lowest level of reality — indefinite, formless, a mirror that reflects nothing.
• It is not evil in itself (since it exists), but becomes evil when the soul identifies with it.
Analogy:
• Darkness = absence of light.
• Evil = Matter at its furthest remove from the One.
“Evil is not in any of the things that are, but in the lack of measure, lack of form.” (I.8.5)
Evil Is Not a Substance — It Is Privation
All that exists comes from the One (the Good) → everything is good by participation.
The Pear Theft: Evil for Its Own Sake (Book II)
• As a teen, Augustine steals pears not to eat, but for the thrill of sinning with friends.
• This shows evil is disordered love—choosing nothingness over God.
In Confessions, Augustine discovers evil is not a rival force but a self-inflicted wound
“All things that exist are good… Evil is not a substance… If there were no good in them, there would be no possibility of their becoming evil. But they do become evil when they turn away from the supreme good (You).”
Key Passage (VII.12)
Christ’s Incarnation shows God enters evil to heal it.
You converted me… You turned me around.
(VIII.12)
Conversion (Book VIII): Grace breaks the chain—will is freed to choose God.
“The enemy held my will… and out of it he fashioned a chain.” (VIII.5)
I loved my own destruction… I loved the fault itself.
II.4–9
This shows evil is disordered love—choosing nothingness over God.
Just as a body is darkened by the withdrawal of light… so the soul is made evil by turning away from God.
Augustine: Evil is not a thing but a defection of the will from God (the Good) to lesser goods, corrupting creation that was originally perfect.
For when the will abandons what is above itself and turns to what is lower, it becomes evil—not because that to which it turns is evil, but because the turning itself is wicked.
(City of God, XII.6)
Christ, the perfectly good man, restores the image of God.
• Grace (not human effort) overcomes the bondage of sin (Romans 7:24–25).
(Redemption)
God did not create evil.
• He permits it to respect free will and bring greater good (e.g., humility, redemption).
• God is sovereign: He turns evil to good (Genesis 50:20; Romans 8:28).
Natural evil is consequential: a result of the fallen order after the Fall (Romans 8:20–22 – creation “groans”).
Two Types of Evil
Moral Evil (malum culpae)
Sinful actions from free will
Natural Evil (malum poenae)
Suffering, disasters
Angels: Some (led by Lucifer) proudly chose self over God → became demons.
• Humans: Adam and Eve chose disobedience (Genesis 3) → original sin.
• Sin is inordinate desire (concupiscence)—loving created things more than the Creator.
All creation (angels, humans, nature) was made good (Genesis 1:31).
• Evil enters through free choice to turn away from God (the Supreme Good) toward lesser goods.
Saint Gothic
Analogy: Darkness is not a thing; it is the absence of light.
Saint Gothic
Evil is the privation of good… just as blindness is the privation of sight.
(Confessions, Book VII)
Saint Gothic
Evil has no independent existence.
• It is a parasitic corruption or absence of good in something that was created good.
The cross stands as the ultimate theodicy: God enters suffering and transforms it.
Evil exists because of free rebellion in a world designed for love and growth. God permits it temporarily, redeems it through Christ, and will eliminate it forever.
A development of Irenaeus: A world with natural evils (earthquakes, disease) is necessary for virtues like bravery, empathy, and faith to develop.
• Without resistance, moral growth is impossible.
Core Idea: Evil is temporary; God will fully eradicate it at Christ’s return (Revelation 21:4: “no more death or mourning…”).
• Already/Not Yet: Christ has defeated evil (Colossians 2:15), but its full removal awaits the new creation.
Core Idea: God’s ways are beyond human understanding (Isaiah 55:8–9). We trust His character even when we lack full answers.
• Book of Job: Job suffers without explanation; God’s response emphasizes His wisdom and power, not a neat justification.
• Pauline View: Present sufferings are “not worth comparing” to future glory (Romans 8:18).
God allows evil to bring about a greater good that could not otherwise exist (e.g., compassion, courage, redemption).
• Example: Joseph’s suffering led to saving nations (Genesis 50:20: “You meant evil… but God meant it for good.”)
• Cruciform Logic: The cross—ultimate evil—becomes the means of ultimate salvation (Colossians 2:15).
• Irenaeus: Humanity is created immature; suffering is part of soul-making—growth toward moral perfection.
• Biblical Support: Genesis 3 (Fall), Joshua 24:15 (“choose this day…”), Romans 5:12.
Idea: God created humans with genuine free will to love and obey Him authentically. Moral evil arises when humans freely choose sin.
• Key Thinkers:
• Augustine: Evil is a privation (absence) of good, not a substance. Satan and humans rebelled by choice.
Theodicy (from Greek theos = God + dikē = justice) is the attempt to reconcile the existence of evil and suffering with the omnipotence, omniscience, and perfect goodness of God. In Christianity, several major theodicies address the “problem of evil”:
Evil is real, pervasive, but not ultimate—God’s goodness and justice prevail.
Redemption: Jesus overcomes evil through His death and resurrection (Colossians 2:15). Believers are called to resist evil, pursue righteousness, and trust God’s final victory (1 Peter 5:8–9; Romans 12:21).
God is holy and does not author evil (James 1:13), but He permits it within His plan, often to refine believers or judge sin (e.g., Joseph’s story in Genesis 50:20). He ultimately defeats evil (Revelation 20–21).
Demons: Satan is the primary adversary, a fallen angel who deceives and accuses (Job 1–2; Revelation 12:9). Demons spread evil but are limited by God’s sovereignty.
