Exhibition notes and biographies discuss his life circumstances (poverty, running away to Bombay, political activity such as the Salt Satyagraha) as shaping his outlook and subjects.
Early life and background
K. H. Ara (Krishnaji Howlaji Ara) was born on 16 April 1914 in Bolarum, Secunderabad and grew up in difficult circumstances after his mother died when he was very young; he ran away to Bombay as a child and supported himself with odd jobs, including cleaning cars.
Political involvement and early influences
As a young man in Bombay Ara took part in the Indian independence movement and was imprisoned for participating in the Salt Satyagraha. His artistic promise was noticed and encouraged by Walter Langhammer, the Austrian artist and art director of The Times of India, which helped him develop as a painter despite being largely self‑taught.
Training and professional beginnings
Although often described as essentially self‑taught, Ara spent time around established artists and the art world of Bombay, beginning his practice with watercolours, gouaches and socio‑historical subjects before moving toward the still lifes, landscapes and human figures that would define his reputation.
Role in the Progressive Artists Group and institutions
Ara was a founding member of the Progressive Artists’ Group in Bombay and later helped establish the Artists’ Centre in Mumbai; he participated in the city’s modernist circles and exhibited widely, winning awards such as annual prizes from the Bombay Art Society during his career.
Signature subjects and artistic style
Ara is widely regarded as among the first contemporary Indian painters to treat the female nude as a central, carefully observed subject. His work is noted for its straightforward, life‑based modernism: robust nudes, intimate still lifes and everyday scenes rendered with a focus on form and composition rather than overt symbolism or folk revivalism.
Later years and legacy
Over time Ara shifted from watercolor and gouache toward oil painting; opinions about his work remained mixed among critics, but he retained an important place in mid‑20th century Indian modern art. A posthumous reappraisal of his work has been seen in exhibitions such as the 2017 show “Privately Ara” that revived interest in his oeuvre. He died on 30 June 1985 in Mumbai.

Nandalal Bose (1882–1966)
• Abanindranath’s student and later principal of Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan.
• Master of transparent watercolor washes; created the famous Haripura Posters and illustrated the original Constitution of India.
Abanindranath Tagore (1871–1951)
• Often called the “father of modern Indian watercolor.”
• Founder of the Bengal School of Art.
• Famous for misty, poetic wash techniques in works like Bharat Mata, The Passing of Shah Jahan, and his Arabian Nights series.

Matthew 7:1–5 (Judging others while ignoring your own sin)
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you”

In Luke 18:9–14, Jesus contrasts two men praying in the temple: a Pharisee who boasts of his righteousness and thanks God he’s not like sinners, versus a tax collector who humbly beats his breast, pleading “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” The Pharisee exalts himself but is humbled; the tax collector humbles himself and is exalted. This parable warns against self-righteous pride, emphasizing that true justification comes through humble repentance before God, not performative piety.
