If a soul in Purgatory said, “I don’t want this anymore, the purification would stop instantly and the soul would enter Heaven imperfect — but no soul ever says that, because love of God has already won.
They know they are saved, they know they are going to Heaven, and they want to be purified more than anything else in existence.
There is suffering in Purgatory — often intense suffering — but there is no oppression at all. Here’s why, and how the two realms differ on this point:
1. No One Is Being Forced to Stay

In short, oppression in Hell works perfectly because every inhabitant (demon and damned alike) has become both the oppressor and the oppressed, voluntarily and eternally. Earthly tyrants only dream of this level of total control; Hell actually
achieves it, not by external force alone, but by making every soul complicit in its own chains and the chains of everyone else.
The Final Cruelty: It Is Self-Chosen
The system is designed so that any large-scale rebellion only reshuffles the oppressors; it never ends the oppression itself.
Temporary revolts happen constantly. A duke will gather an army, march on a prince, win for a decade or two, then be betrayed by his own lieutenants and spend the next ten thousand years nailed to a wall of frozen screams.
Demons will impersonate loved ones, offer fake hope, then rip it away at the perfect psychological moment. They have eternity to get the timing exactly right.
Memory and Regret as Weapons
Souls remember Earth perfectly. Every kind word they refused to say, every person they betrayed, every chance they ignored is replayed endlessly by demons who can read the soul like an open book.
The result is that every soul in Hell voluntarily participates in its own eternal oppression and the oppression of others. Free will is preserved in the most horrific way possible.
This creates an endless pyramid: everyone is both victim and perpetrator. The only people who refuse to participate are torn apart even worse, so almost no one refuses for long.
The new arrival almost always accepts and starts torturing the weaker ones, because it is the only relief available from its own torment.
As soon as a human soul arrives, the demons immediately give it minor power over other, say, a thousand weaker souls.
The Damned Oppress Each Other
This is the cruelest part, and the one every source agrees on.
Higher demons literally feed on the torment of lower demons and human souls. The more intense and creative the suffering, the more “status” and power the oppressor gains.
The Currency is Pain
Pain, despair, humiliation, and regret are the only commodities that never run out.
There is no loyalty upward, only fear. There is no mercy downward, only sadism.
Promotion is only possible by betraying or destroying your superior. Demotion is instantaneous and usually involves being flayed alive for a few centuries.
Below them are the nine (or seven) Princes / Kings of Hell, then dukes, marquises, earls, presidents, etc. Each rank has absolute life-and-death power over the ranks below.
The strong oppress the weak because they can, and the weak dream only of the day they will be strong enough to turn the tables. This is not a side-effect; it is the operating system.
There is no social contract, no possibility of reform, no retirement, no death. Every soul and every demon is locked in an eternal zero-sum game
The Fundamental Law of Hell: “Do unto others before they do unto you — forever.”
The one constant across almost every version is that Hell’s government is unstable, back-stabby, and held together mostly by terror and power, never love or loyalty.
Some Gnostics and modern chaos magicians say the “rulers of Hell” are actually the archons who rule this world, and Hell is the material plane itself. The traditional fiery Hell is a psy-op to keep souls recycling through fear.
Modern Occult / Theistic Satanism
Some groups (e.g., Temple of Set, some Luciferians) view Lucifer/Satan not as a Christian devil but as a liberator figure. Hell is not a place of punishment but an astral realm of self-deification.
In these systems, “demons” are ancient gods or archetypes that rule their own domains cooperatively, not under one tyrant.
Islamic Jinn / Iblis Tradition
Iblis (the Islamic equivalent of Satan) refused to bow to Adam and was cast out.
He is granted dominion over the jinn and over Hell until Judgment Day, but he is not “king” in a majestic sense; he is more like a condemned warden who rules other condemned beings.
No elaborate feudal hierarchy; the emphasis is on Iblis as tempter-in-chief rather than monarch.

John Milton’s Paradise Lost (1667): Satan is a tragic, charismatic rebel-king who still commands legions, holds councils, and plots against God. This is the version that gave us the idea of a proud, governing Satan.
