On Sunday, November 28, 1773, the merchant ship Dartmouth sailed into Boston harbor, carrying a cargo of tea. It was the first tea ship to arrive since Parliament had passed the Tea Act, which allowed the East India Company to ship its tea directly to the colonies without having to go through British middlemen. The effect of the Act was to significantly reduce the cost of tea. Parliament assumed that when tea became much cheaper the North American colonists would give up their opposition to the small tax that was imposed on its sale. That assumption was incorrect.
The morning after the Dartmouth arrived, (November 29—a placard appeared, posted all over Boston. It read:
“Friends! Brethren! Countrymen!—That worst of plagues, the detested Tea shipped for this port by the East India Company, is now arrived in the Harbor; the Hour of Destruction, or manly opposition to the Machinations of Tyranny, stares you in the Face; every Friend to his Country, to himself, and to Posterity is now called upon to meet at Faneuil Hall, at nine o’clock This Day (at which time the bells will ring), in make united and successful resistance to this last, worst, and most destructive measure of administration.”
At that meeting the Sons of Liberty organized resistance, posting sentries at the harbor to make sure that the tea was not unloaded. It was not the price of the tea that they objected to, but rather that Americans were being required to pay a tax imposed by a Parliament in which they had no representation—“machinations of tyranny,” to which they would not submit.
Over the next two weeks two more tea ships arrived, and the Patriots prevented them from unloading as well. When the ships’ captains proposed that they return to England with the tea, royal governor Thomas Hutchinson refused to permit them to leave. As determined as the Sons of Liberty were to prevent the “detested tea” from coming ashore, Hutchinson was equally determined to see that it did.
The standoff would come to a head 18 days later, in what history remembers as the Boston Tea Party, when Sons of Liberty rowed out to the ships, boarded them, and tossed the tea into Boston Harbor.
