Sand, Time, and Symbolism
Through twisted trees and fog so thick
The Christmas spirits play their trick
The Bible frequently uses sand as a metaphor for impermanence and the shifting foundations of life.
Matthew 7:26: “But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.” This verse highlights the danger of building one’s life on unstable principles. The sand represents fleeting values or a lack of spiritual grounding.
Conversely, sand can also symbolize vastness and countless blessings, akin to the stars in the sky. The promises made to Abraham often invoke the image of descendants as numerous as the grains of sand on the seashore (Genesis 22:17).
Quicksand, though not explicitly mentioned, embodies hidden danger and the risk of being swallowed by deceit or temptation.
Castles: Fortresses of Faith and Decay
Castles represent strength, security, and dominion. However, they can also symbolize isolation, decay, and the transience of power.
In a religious context, a castle can represent the human body as a temple or fortress for the soul, needing constant protection from worldly influences.
However, the ruined castle is a staple of Gothic literature, signifying the decline of dynasties, the futility of earthly ambitions, and the haunting presence of the past.

Time: Eternity and Ephemerality
Time, both as linear progression and cyclical recurrence, is a crucial theme. The Bible emphasizes the eternal nature of God and the importance of living in accordance with His divine timeline.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 states, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” This acknowledges the rhythm and purpose within the passage of time.
From a mystical perspective, time is often viewed as more fluid, with glimpses into past lives, prophecies, and the interconnectedness of all moments.

Greek and German Orthodox: Gothic prints often depicted Byzantine imagery, emphasizing the spiritual weight of icons and the passage of time through generations of faith.
Austrian, Ukrainian, Peruvian, Argentinian, Brazilian: These traditions blend Catholic imagery with local folklore. Sand might represent ancestral lands, castles the colonial power, and time the endurance of indigenous cultures.
Arabian: Sandstorms as divine judgement, castles as symbols of power and opulence, and the cyclical nature of time influencing storytelling and philosophy.
Native American: Sand paintings and earthworks connect to time through cycles of creation and destruction. Castles are replaced by natural formations, sacred sites. Time is circular, linked to seasons and ancestors.
Gothic print editions might have interpreted these traditions through a romantic or exoticized lens, influencing perceptions of these cultures in the Western world.
Consider the influence of such prints on gothic architecture, literature, and art.
Pagan, Supernatural, and Fairytale Associations
Sand can be a threshold between worlds in pagan traditions, a place for rituals or communicating with spirits. Quicksand may represent a portal or a dangerous obstacle.
Fairytales often feature castles as enchanted places, holding captive princesses or guarding ancient secrets. Time within these castles is often distorted, with characters experiencing temporal loops or extended periods of slumber. Supernatural entities, like djinn in Arabian tales, are often associated with sand and the desert.
Folklore throughout the world often features trickster figures who can manipulate sand and time to their advantage.
Steampunk, Horror, Mystery, Esoteric, and Occult Influences
Steampunk: Sand timers and clockwork mechanisms embody the Victorian fascination with time and invention. Castles may be reimagined as fortified factories or airship docks.
Horror: Quicksand as a terrifying symbol of inescapable doom. Castles as haunted locations, echoing with the sins of the past. Time as a force that erodes sanity and brings about inevitable decay.
Esoteric and Occult: Sand in divination practices (geomancy). Castles as symbols of the self and the need for inner fortification. Time as a dimension to be manipulated through ritual and meditation.
Astrology: Sand may connect to the element of Earth and associated zodiac signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), representing groundedness and practicality. Time is intrinsically linked to planetary cycles and astrological transits.
Paris’s historical architecture, particularly structures like the Conciergerie (a former royal palace and prison), embody the castle archetype. The Seine river’s sediment (sand) contributes to the city’s physical foundation, symbolically linking the city to time and the gradual accumulation of history. The Parisian catacombs offer a literal descent into the earth, reminiscent of quicksand’s engulfing nature, while astrological influences have historically been prevalent in Parisian intellectual circles.
The symbolism of sand, quicksand, castles, and time is deeply embedded in human consciousness, transcending religious and cultural boundaries. From biblical parables to steampunk fantasies, these elements continue to resonate within our art, literature, and spiritual understanding. By exploring their diverse interpretations, we gain a richer appreciation for the complexities of human experience and the enduring power of symbolic representation.
Round the fire, witches dance
Cast their spells in midnight trance

Silver moonbeams paint the world in shades of mystery and wonder untold
Beneath the moon’s ethereal glow,
Where ancient spirits softly flow,
In gardens dark with roses deep,
The night awakens from its sleep
Through corridors of velvet night,
Where shadows dance with silver light,
The gothic heart finds its true home,
In twilight’s realm we freely roam
Stars like diamonds pierce the veil,
Telling us their ancient tale,
Of magic woven through the dark,
Each constellation leaves its mark
The moon teaches us that darkness is not to be feared, but embraced as part of the eternal cycle
In the quiet of midnight, the soul speaks its deepest truths to those who dare to listen

A chatelaine is a decorative belt hook or clasp worn at the waist with a series of chains suspended from it. Each chain is mounted with useful household appendages such as scissors, thimbles, watches, keys, vinaigrette, and household seals. The chatelaine was also used as a woman’s keychain in the 19th century to show the status of women in a household.

‘Bananas.’ (1956) Throughout his career Lucian Freud was fascinated with plants and approached the painting of them without smothering them with symbolic meaning much the same as his mentor Cedric Morris, himself an evocative and unsentimental flower painter.

Ruskin Spear looked to Spencer Gore’s ‘From a Window in the Hampstead Road,’ (1911) as an inspiration for this work from around 1955. The construction of a window pane in front of the window’s view appealed to Spear; it was a motif to which he returned on several occasions.

The coffin of the Germany’s Red Baron being carried by members of the Australian No. 3 Squadron, lead by an English priest, for burial in northern France. The ace pilot of WW1 was shot down on April 21, 1918, and given a full military funeral by the Australian unit who recovered his body…
The man inside the coffin was Manfred von Richthofen, better known to history as the Red Baron. With 80 confirmed aerial victories, he was the most celebrated fighter ace of the First World War and a symbol of German air power. His bright red Fokker triplane made him instantly recognizable in the skies above the Western Front and turned him into a legend on both sides of the conflict.
On April 21, 1918, Richthofen was shot down during a low altitude pursuit over northern France. He was only 25 years old. The exact source of the fatal shot has been debated for over a century, with evidence suggesting it may have come from ground fire rather than another pilot. Regardless of how he fell, his death marked the end of an era in early aerial warfare.
What followed was remarkable. The Australian No. 3 Squadron, who recovered his body, chose to honor him as a fellow airman rather than an enemy. They arranged a full military funeral, complete with an honor guard, wreaths, and a religious service led by an English priest. In a war defined by mass death and industrial brutality, this act stood out as a rare moment of respect and shared humanity between foes.
Pilots from Australian squadron placed wreaths on Richthofen’s coffin bearing handwritten messages that read “To Our Gallant and Worthy Foe” and “Our Enemy, but Honored as a Brave Man,” sentiments almost unheard of in the trenches of World War I.
