Opening *a can of worms* describes a situation where someone brings up an issue that seems small at first but ends up unleashing a whole mess of complications, problems, or unexpected consequences.
It’s the conversational equivalent of tugging on one loose thread and suddenly the whole sweater unravels.
People usually use it when:
– A question leads to a much bigger debate than expected
– A simple task reveals hidden problems
– Someone unintentionally stirs up drama or controversy

**Short answer:** **“Open a can of worms” is an American idiom that arose in the mid‑20th century, drawing on the literal image of sealed cans of fishing bait that, once opened, spill wriggling worms and become hard to control**.
Origin and dating
The phrase appears to have **emerged in U.S. usage in the early 1950s**, becoming common in newspapers and popular writing soon after; idiom researchers date it to that period and attribute the image to fishermen’s canned bait. **The key historical point is the mid‑20th‑century American origin**.
Why that image makes sense
Before modern plastic tubs, **fishermen often bought live earthworms packed in metal cans; once opened the worms would wriggle everywhere, creating a messy, hard‑to‑contain situation**—a vivid literal scene that easily became a metaphor for starting something that unleashes many unforeseen problems. **That physical image is the direct source of the figurative meaning**.
How dictionaries and usage treat it
Contemporary dictionaries define **“open a can of worms”** as **to create a complicated situation in which solving one problem leads to many more**; the idiom is used as a caution against raising issues likely to produce cascading complications. It’s now a standard idiom in journalistic and everyday English.
Quick guide: when to use the idiom
– **Use it** when a proposed action or question is likely to reveal many hidden problems or provoke messy debate.
– **Avoid it** when the situation is simple or the consequences are well understood.
– **Tone:** it’s often cautionary or mildly humorous; in formal writing, consider a literal alternative (e.g., “this could create further complications”) if you need precision.
Examples and nuance
– **Example:** “Changing the tax rule now might open a can of worms”—meaning the change could trigger many unintended issues.
– **Nuance:** sometimes used hyperbolically; context tells whether the speaker warns seriously or jokes about potential trouble.
Risks and limitations
– **Cultural note:** the image is rooted in mid‑20th‑century American fishing practice and may be less vivid for audiences unfamiliar with canned bait.
– **Overuse:** it’s a common cliché in journalism; relying on it too often can weaken writing.

Glance along the north side of the Abbey’s nave and you’ll see a series of eight stained glass windows, each depicting an English king alongside an abbot of Westminster of the same era.
The windows were designed by artist and architect Sir John Ninian Comper in the early twentieth century, and in this series we’ll be taking a look at the lives of some of those depicted.
We’re beginning today with William of Colchester, who served as Abbot of Westminster from 1386. He had arrived at the monastery in 1361 and held various offices including treasurer before becoming abbot.
He became embroiled in a plot to restore Richard II to the throne and was imprisoned in the Tower of London for a short period in 1400 after Henry IV’s accession, but was reinstated during the reign of Henry V. He is buried in the chapel of St John the Baptist and is remembered with this stained-glass window in the nave.
