Wild Moon Magazine X Goats
Goats have a complex, contradictory, and deeply rooted presence in mythology, demonology, and religion, evolving from symbols of fertility and pastoral life in antiquity to figures of evil in Christian theology
. They are often associated with wilderness, independence, and the transgression of boundaries.
1. Religion and Mythology
Fertility and Nature: In many early societies, goats were associated with pastoral life, endurance, and fertility. In Greek mythology, the god Pan—often depicted as a satyr (half-goat, half-human)—was a rustic, pastoral deity. Similarly, the Roman Faun was associated with pastoral lands, though later conflated with the wilder Greek satyrs.
Deity Associations: In Vedic tradition, a goat pulled the chariot of the fire god Agni. In Norse mythology, the god Thor’s chariot was drawn by goats.
Symbolism in Judaism/Bible: Goats were permitted for sacrifice and were valuable for food and milk. However, they also symbolize rebellion, stubbornness, and separation from God, as they are independent compared to obedient sheep.
The Scapegoat (Azazel): In Leviticus 16, two goats were chosen for the Day of Atonement. One was sacrificed to God, while the other—the “scapegoat” or Azazel—had the sins of the people confessed over it and was driven into the wilderness. Some interpretations consider Azazel to be a desert demon.
2. Demonology and Satanism
The transformation of the goat from a symbol of fertility to a symbol of the devil was driven by the early Christian church to vilify pagan religions.
Pan to Devil: Christian imagery co-opted the features of Pan (horns, hooves, goat legs) to portray the devil as a beast of sin.
“Sheep and Goats”: In Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus separates humanity into sheep (righteous) and goats (accursed), further cementing the goat’s association with the devil and evil.
Baphomet: A medieval idol, later reimagined by 19th-century occultist Éliphas Lévi as the “Sabbatic Goat,” Baphomet represents a blend of human/animal and male/female opposites. While it is a symbol of occultism and balance rather than a literal devil, it has become closely linked with modern Satanism.
Krampus: A goat-demon from Alpine folklore who punishes, kidnaps, or eats naughty children during the Christmas season.
Witchcraft: Medieval folklore often described the devil appearing in the form of a goat during witch orgies (sabbats).
3. Fairytales and Folklore
The “Billy Goats Gruff”: The Three Billy Goats Gruff is a popular Norwegian fairy tale where goats overcome a troll, highlighting their cleverness and, in some interpretations, their independence.
“The Wolf and the Seven Young Goats”: A Brothers Grimm fairy tale about a mother goat whose kids are tricked by a wolf, focusing on themes of caution and cleverness.
Characteristics: In folklore, they are often portrayed as stubborn, clever, or, because of their ability to climb, as bridge-crossers or keepers of rocky, forbidden terrain.
In summary, the goat represents a “shaggy” or “wild” element in human culture, embodying both the nurturing, fruitful aspects of nature and the untamed, rebellious, and “demonic” aspects that were feared or suppressed in later religious traditions.
