The state banquet table (a mere 155 feet) is looking stunning tonight for the Nigerian State banquet at Windsor. It’s laden with locally-picked seasonal flowers and bathed in the light of 143 candles. Staff have been laying it out since Monday morning with 960 knives and forks!

Capstone (Pyramidion) of the Black Pyramid at Dashur (1850 BC) also known as Pyramid of King Amenemhat III (1860-1814 BC), 12th Dynasty during Middle Kingdom, ancient Egypt. It was discovered in 1900 AD, during archaeological excavations, by then-director of Department of Antiquities Gaston Maspero, on the east side of pyramid of Amenemhat, a grey block was found sticking out of the sand, which, upon closer inspection, was decorated with beautiful inscriptions. After excavation, pyramidion was transported to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Capstone carved out of single piece of basalt (black granite), mostly intact apart from a broken corner. With a height of 1.40m and base length 1.85m, it weighs around 4.5 tonnes. Bottom edges are undercut to keep block in position atop the pyramid. Four upper faces were polished and inscribed. Side which pointed to east is adorned with a winged sun disk flanked by two uraei. Below, two wedjat represent eyes of king himself. Further down, three nefer signs stand for beauty or perfection. Finally, a sun disk represents god Ra, from which throne name of Amenemhat “Ni-maat-re” extends to right and his personal name “Imen-em-hat” to left. As a whole, composition reads: “Amenemhat beholds perfection of Ra”.

The Waning Keeper
“When the moon thins to a silver thread, the Keeper walks the castle ramparts — counting every soul who dreams beneath her light. Those who wake during her count are granted a single question about their fate.”
— Carpathian Lunar Folklore, c. 1340
The Nocturne Vow
“We who paint by candlelight swear fealty not to beauty, but to the shadows that make beauty visible. Without darkness, there is no revelation — only glare.”
— Nocturne Atelier Manifesto, Prague, 1923
Ancient Saying
“Build your castle where the moon falls longest — for a house kissed by moonlight shall never know true ruin.”

— The Bone Meridian, Nocturne Prose Collection

Before the crown and before the stage, there is something even more powerful: women.
Courage. Resilience. Kindness. Ambition.
Dreams that refuse to be small.
From every corner of the world, their voices rise, inspire and transform.
Because women are not just part of the universe…
They are the Universe.

Life in a Castle After Dark
Great question! Castles at night were fascinating places, full of practical challenges and rich in atmosphere. Here’s how they functioned:
Lighting & Visibility
Before electric lighting, castles relied on torches, candles, oil lamps, and hearth fires. Most corridors were pitch black — servants carried candles to navigate. Great halls had large fireplaces that provided warmth and light for evening gatherings. Rushlights (reeds dipped in fat) were the cheapest option for common areas.
Security & Watch
Gatehouse was sealed at dusk — drawbridges raised, portcullises lowered
Night watchmen patrolled the walls in shifts, calling out the hours
Guard dogs roamed courtyards
Arrow slits allowed defenders to watch approaches in moonlight
Daily Routines
People went to bed shortly after sunset (candles were expensive!)
The kitchen banked its fires for the night
Chamber pots were used since going outside was dangerous in the dark
Why Castles Inspired Spooky Stories
Wind howling through stone corridors sounded like ghostly moans
Flickering torchlight created moving shadows everywhere
Drafts would slam doors or blow out candles suddenly
Echoes in empty halls made footsteps sound like someone following you
Bats, owls, and rats were constant nighttime companions
The combination of darkness, strange sounds, and isolation made castles the perfect setting for every ghost story and legend imaginable!
