Since the founding of the USA, over 15,000 individuals have been executed for capital offenses. The most recent data indicates that 1,243 prisoners were executed in 2023, with Texas and Florida accounting for a significant portion of these executions. There is no definitive, fully reliable total for the number of executions carried out by Iran since the establishment of the Islamic Republic in 1979. Because Iran does not publish full execution records—and many executions are secret—researchers rely on partial official data, court reports, leaked information, and human‑rights monitoring. This means all totals are undercounts.
Human‑rights historians estimate:
1980s: Thousands executed during political purges, including the 1988 mass executions (often estimated at 4,000–5,000, but some sources claim higher).
1990s–2000s: Hundreds per year, rising sharply in the mid‑2000s due to drug‑related death sentences.
2010s–2020s: Roughly 5,000–7,000+ documented, with many more likely unreported.
Because Iran conducts many secret executions—especially for drug offenses and political cases—the true total since 1979 is widely believed to be well above 20,000, and possibly significantly higher.
