Alcyone reaches out to touch him in her sleep, but Morpheus vanishes as she wakes. Though the message was devastating, it provided the closure she needed, eventually leading to the myth’s conclusion
where the gods, moved by pity, transform both Alcyone and Ceyx into kingfishers (Halcyon birds).
The Dream of Alcyone
Morpheus flies on silent wings to the bedside of Alcyone. He transforms himself into the likeness of the drowned Ceyx. Appearing pale, naked, and dripping with seawater, Morpheus stands before Alcyone in her sleep.💤
In the voice of her lost husband, he tells her that he is dead and that her prayers for his return can no longer help him.
The Selection of Morpheus
Somnus chooses one of his thousand sons to carry out the task: Morpheus. While his brothers Phobetor (who mimics beasts) and Phantasos (who mimics inanimate objects like stone or water)
handle other types of dreams, Morpheus is the master of mimicking the human form.
He is uniquely skilled at replicating:
• The gait and posture of a specific person.
• The exact tone and quality of their voice.
• The characteristic clothing and vocabulary of the individual.
Iris travels to the Cimmerian lands, a place of perpetual twilight where the sun never shines and silence reigns. There, she finds the cave of Somnus, which is surrounded by poppies and herbs that induce slumber.
After waking the lethargic Somnus with her radiant light, Iris delivers Juno’s command and quickly departs before she, too, succumbs to the heavy air of sleep.
The Messenger and the Sleep King
The narrative begins with Iris, the goddess of the rainbow and messenger of Juno (Hera). Juno tasks Iris with a mission: she must travel to the underworld to find Somnus (Hypnos), the personification of Sleep.
Her goal is to request that a dream be sent to Alcyone to inform her of the tragic death of her husband, Ceyx, who had perished in a shipwreck.
The story of Morpheus and Iris is a classic mythological tale found in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, centered on the themes of sleep, dreams, and divine communication.
